It’s Bird of the Year 2025 – and the kōkako needs your vote!
The North Island kōkako is officially listed as “in serious trouble” and we’re on a mission to change that. Bird of the Year is about more than just a friendly vote; it’s about raising awareness for Aotearoa New Zealand’s incredible native wildlife, their homes, and the threats they face. Too many of our species are at risk of extinction, and they need champions, like you.
We’ve long admired the work Bird of the Year does, and we’re proud to play our part in helping the kōkako make a comeback.
Fun facts about the Kōkako
- The North Island kōkako is endemic to New Zealand, meaning it’s found nowhere else in the world.
- Kōkako are often called the “ghosts of the forest” because of their haunting, organ-like song. Spooky!
- They have bright blue wattles at the base of the beak (South Island kōkako had orange wattles).
- Mostly herbivorous, eating leaves, fruit, and flowers, though they will also take invertebrates.
- Known for pair-bonding: kōkako usually mate for life. Quite sweet really.
How we support the Kōkako
Over the years, we’ve rolled up our sleeves to support kōkako recovery through funding, volunteering, and ongoing partnerships. Today, we work closely with the Rotoehu Ecological Trust (RET) and the Kōkako Ecosanctuary.
When you shop with us, you’ll see an option at checkout to donate directly to these foundations. With your help, they can continue their vital conservation work and bring this hauntingly beautiful bird back from the brink. Want to learn more about how you can donate? Click here.
